Moses Shabbethai Beer

Moses Shabbethai Beer was a prominent Italian rabbi, born in the city of Pesaro. His career as a rabbi took him to Rome, where he began serving in December 1825. During his tenure, he played a significant role in representing the Jewish community in Rome, facilitating important interactions with the Catholic Church.

Beer's efforts led to historic meetings with two popes, marking a significant milestone for the Roman Jewish community. In 1827, he was granted an interview with Pope Leo XII, and again in 1831 with Pope Gregory XVI. These meetings were unprecedented, as they marked the first time a representative of the Roman Jews was permitted to appear in person before the pontiff, allowing Beer to advocate on behalf of his community.
