Barbu Nemțeanu
poet, umorist, traducător
Barbu Nemțeanu was a Romanian poet, humorist, and translator, who was active in the modernist wing of the Romanian Symbolist movement. Born in 1887, he was of Jewish Romanian background and spent much of his life in the port city of Galați. This city, with its unique blend of cultural and economic influences, provided Nemțeanu with a rich source of poetic inspiration. Despite the limitations of provincial life, Nemțeanu's experiences in Galați had a profound impact on his work, shaping his intellectual and artistic perspectives.
Nemțeanu's life was marked by challenges, including being orphaned at a young age and struggling with tuberculosis. He found work as a clerk, but his true passion lay in his writing. Throughout his life, Nemțeanu maintained a strong confidence in his poetic abilities, and his work reflects a blend of Symbolist and socialist influences. Notably, his admiration for Romanian culture allowed him to publish work in various reviews, including traditionalist-antisemitic publications. Nemțeanu was also part of the Convorbiri Critice circle, where he formed close friendships with prominent literary figures, including Mihail Dragomirescu. He passed away in 1919, leaving behind a legacy as a unique and important voice in Romanian literature.
