Alexandru Șafran

Alexandru Șafran was a prominent rabbi who held significant positions in both Romania and Switzerland. His early career was marked by his appointment as the chief rabbi of Romania, a role he held from 1940 to 1948. During this period, he demonstrated exceptional courage and diplomacy in his interactions with the fascist government led by Ion Antonescu.

Șafran's most notable achievement was his successful intervention on behalf of the Jewish community during the Holocaust. Through his efforts, he was able to save numerous Jews from persecution, making his actions a rare instance of effective resistance against the authorities. In 1948, Șafran relocated to Switzerland, where he continued to serve as a rabbi, bringing his experience and leadership to a new community. His legacy is marked by his bravery and dedication to protecting the Jewish people during a time of great turmoil.
