Shimon Lavi
Libyan Jewish scholar (1486–1585)
Shimon Lavi was a prominent Libyan Jewish scholar who lived from 1486 to 1585. He was a multifaceted individual with expertise in various fields, including Judaism, medicine, astronomy, and poetry. As a Sephardi Hakham and kabbalist, Lavi played a significant role in the Jewish community, particularly in Tripoli, Libya, where he spent over three decades serving as a spiritual leader and dayan.
Lavi's contributions to Jewish scholarship are notable, especially his commentary on the Zohar, titled Ketem Paz. He also authored a popular kabbalistic hymn called "Bar Yochai", which became widely known in the Jewish world. His efforts to establish and revive religious institutions in Tripoli helped to promote Torah study in the region. Libyan Jews hold him in high esteem, regarding him as their greatest scholar, a testament to his enduring legacy and impact on the Jewish community.
