Samuel ben Isaac ha-Sardi

13th-century Spanish rabbi

Samuel ben Isaac ha-Sardi was a prominent figure in 13th-century Spanish Judaism. Born in Spain, he pursued his early education under the guidance of Rabbi Nathan ben Meir of Trinquetaille, located in Provence. Following his studies, Samuel returned to his native Spain, where he would go on to establish himself as a respected rabbi.

The origins of Samuel's surname "ha-Sardi" have been subject to interpretation by various scholars. Some, like David Conforte, suggest that it is derived from the island of Sardinia. Alternatively, other historians, including Zacuto and Heilprin, refer to him as "Ha-Sefaradi," which implies a connection to the Sephardic Jewish community. Despite these variations, Samuel ben Isaac ha-Sardi remains an important figure in the history of Spanish Judaism, with his life and work reflecting the intellectual and cultural exchanges of his time.
