American rabbi
Mordechai Yissachar Ber Leifer was a prominent American rabbi who served as the third Rebbe of the Pittsburgh Hasidic dynasty. Born in the United States, he later relocated to Ashdod, Israel, where he joined his father, Grand Rabbi Avraham Abba Leifer, in 1981 to lead a new yeshiva as its rosh yeshiva. This marked the beginning of his significant contributions to the Pittsburgh Hasidic community in Israel.
As Rebbe, Mordechai Yissachar Ber Leifer played a pivotal role in expanding the Hasidic presence in Ashdod, establishing new schools and institutions, and growing the Pittsburgher community in the city to nearly 200 families. He also provided spiritual guidance to Pittsburgher Hasidim in various locations, including Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Beit Hilkia, New York City, and California. A renowned Torah scholar and talented musical composer, he led the Hasidut for three decades, leaving a lasting legacy until his passing in 2020.
