Merry Alpern
American photographer
Merry Alpern is a prominent American photographer, recognized for her thought-provoking and often controversial work. Her photographs have been exhibited in numerous esteemed museums and institutions across the United States, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. Alpern's work has also been featured at the National Museum of Women in the Arts and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, showcasing her significant contribution to the art world.
Alpern's most notable series, Dirty Windows, was created in 1993-94 and sparked intense debate due to its provocative subject matter. The series, which captured images of an illegal sex club in Manhattan, led to a highly publicized rejection of her recommended photography fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1994. Despite the backlash, Alpern's work gained widespread attention, with several museums hastily exhibiting her series. She continued to push boundaries with her subsequent project, Shopping, which utilized hidden video cameras to document scenes in department stores, malls, and fitting rooms between 1997-99. Through her unflinching lens, Alpern has established herself as a fearless and innovative photographer, unafraid to tackle taboo subjects and challenge societal norms.
